How Squiggle Room Prepares Children for Kindergarten

What does it really mean for a child to be ready for kindergarten? How can you tell if your little one is ready?
Picture the first day of kindergarten with your child.
They’re carrying a lunchbox with a heartfelt sticky note, wearing a backpack that’s slightly too big, and running toward a cheerful, colorful classroom full of other kiddos.
While learning numbers and the alphabet are foundational steps toward kindergarten readiness, it’s equally as important to work on social and interpersonal skills, such as building confidence, curiosity, and communication. Through play-based learning, children feel more prepared to navigate new experiences, build relationships, and thrive in the classroom while learning the foundations.
Our unique approach combines play-based learning with Reggio Emilia–inspired and Montessori-informed practices, enabling children to build skills naturally through projects, play, and relationships with caring teachers, long before the first day of school.
This article explores how Squiggle Room Early Learning Center helps children build the confidence, curiosity, and everyday skills that make the move to kindergarten feel like an exciting next step.
What Does Kindergarten Readiness Look Like?
A typical morning for your kindergartner might look like:
Listening to fun, fictional stories on an alphabet-patterned carpet
Sharing markers and waxy crayons with classmates
Kindly asking a teacher for help with a workbook activity
Rebuilding a wooden block tower that can’t seem to stand up straight
Each of these moments requires social-emotional skills, problem-solving, and fine motor skills.
Our programs are designed to support your child with a well-rounded experience, including activities that drive social-emotional skills, language and literacy, cognitive development, fine motor skills, alongside creativity.
Providing Support and Safety
Your children rely on a steady routine and support system throughout their day. This structure builds confidence and independence, and an improved sense of curiosity.
Adjusting to Group Settings
Kindergarten is a group experience, and the practice starts early. Even in our toddler classrooms, children experience circle time, small-group activities, and everyday moments with peers (sharing toys, craft materials, etc.)
With a teacher nearby to guide them, children begin to practice self-control, following rules, and solving problems together. By the time Pre-K arrives, many are ready to continue building on those skills.
Play That Builds Real Skills
We prepare children by providing engaging activities that develop necessary skills for kindergarten, while maintaining a fun environment with play and creativity along the way.
Step into one of our thoughtfully designed classrooms and you'll find learning centers where children are free to follow their interests while learning skills through play-based learning.
Block building explores balance, spatial relationships, and problem-solving.
Pretend play builds language, cooperation, and perspective-taking.
Art and sensory play improve hand strength and coordination, while inviting creativity and decision-making (great for writing-prep!).
Books and storytelling grow vocabulary, listening skills, and a love of stories.
Programs Built with Your Child’s Needs at the Center
Our Preschool and Pre-K program (ages three to four) sets the groundwork for kindergarten.
Children who have started to master following directions, self-control, and fine motor skills can begin working on writing, recognizing letters, numbers, their name, and sight words. In addition to daily structured large-group and small-group time, children have dedicated time for play and choosing activities based on their interests.
Building Independence, One Small Choice at a Time
Squiggle Room’s philosophy is Montessori-informed, encouraging children to have an active role in their own learning and decision-making. The independence learned from selecting new activities and materials builds confidence that travels with your child to their new classroom.
Families Are Part of the Journey
Teachers share updates, insights, and progress, while families share insights about their child: what sparks their curiosity, what makes them nervous, and what makes them laugh. Together, we work to shape an experience that fits each child.
Activities for Families to Try at Home
Want to improve your child’s kindergarten readiness at home? Small habits go a long way:
Read together every day.
Make room for independence in their routine.
Provide activities that give little hands a workout (playdough, crayons, tearing paper, etc.) to build strength for writing.
Encourage them to talk about their day.
Introduce them to their elementary school before the first day.
