Lighting & Color
The learning environment matters. Light, color, and space all shape how children feel throughout the day — calm, comfortable, ready to explore, and ready to connect. At Squiggle Room Early Learning Center in Ann Arbor, we intentionally design our classrooms to support focus, movement, and play-based learning.
Lighting
Natural light helps create a steady, welcoming environment for young children. Research suggests that daylight exposure can support mood, sleep routines, and attention — all of which matter in early childhood classrooms.
At Squiggle Room, we designed our building with these goals in mind. You’ll notice bright, open rooms and lighting choices that feel warm and comfortable throughout the day, helping children move, learn, and play in a space that feels safe and inviting.

What families notice right away:

The Effects of Colors
Color influences how a space feels. Thoughtful color choices can help create a calm, focused environment where children feel comfortable participating, exploring, and learning.
Our center’s palette was selected intentionally to support:
-
A sense of calm and emotional regulation
-
Focus during learning activities
-
Warmth and comfort during routines and transitions
-
A space that feels inviting without being overstimulating
